The child-centered philosophy of Camp Thunderbird is the same now as it was in 1946. We believe in providing kids with a safe, nurturing, non-competitive environment in which they can challenge themselves and gain independence. We provide the attention and support necessary to help each child cultivate their individuality and enhance self-esteem.

Group living in our diverse community helps instill values like compromise, teamwork, respect, and tolerance. Today more than ever, kids need the opportunity to live and play in the outdoors, free from the pressures of materialism and technology. It is our hope that campers leave Thunderbird with a sense of independence, a respect for nature, and a collection of life skills that will carry them into adulthood.

Our Core Values

Adventure Builds Friendship

When campers are challenged together, whether that be a canoe trip, regatta or early morning hike, they learn to believe that shared experiences create deep bonds. Here, friendships last far beyond the summer, they last a lifetime.

Confidence Through Competence

Through overcoming challenges and developing real life skills, campers discover their own strengths and capabilities. This sense of earned confidence empowers them to approach life with courage and curiosity.

Disconnect to Reconnect

In a world filled with screens, it's a gift to be able to step away from the fast pace of everyday life. When campers disconnect from their devices, they reconnect with nature.

Learning to Love Nature Teaches us to Love Ourselves

Time spent in nature has a way of shifting perspectives and grounding campers. The pressures that follow children in their day-to-day lives shifts when they're out on the water, the trail, or tucked under the tall trees at camp. We find that quickly, they come back to themselves in a way that is hard to put into words, but quite easy to notice.

Treat Others With Kindness and Respect

Thunderbird draws campers and staff in from all around the country, and in some cases, the world. What ties our community together isn't where they're from, but how we treat each other. This starts on day one and by the end of camp, becomes second nature. By choosing to treat others with compassion, campers help create a culture where everyone feels like family.

Fun with Purpose

Through purposeful programming, campers learn that growth and joy can coincide. When campers are happy and fully engaged, we see them succeed like never before.

Our Community

Intentionality, consistency, and love. The three keys to building our community, and something we’ve been working on for 80 years. Norms change with the times, but our three keys hold true. We set the rules, the values, the program, and our community helps us adjust it year after year. We are constantly striving for that state of equilibrium that can so rarely be achieved in society, but can be achieved on our own.

As your child makes their way throughout camp, there isn’t a person that walks by that doesn’t know their name. Every single child at camp matters, and they feel this. Our goal is for your child to be a member of Camp Thunderbird’s community for life; growing with us, and our program.

We know that the little things matter the most when it comes to caring for your child. So, every night one of our directors will stop by your child’s cabin to say goodnight, check in, and offer a hug, handshake, or high five. Why? Because kids need that extra layer of love. When intentionality, consistency, and love align, kids feel comfortable failing and trying again. This is what we mean when we say that you and your family are part of the Thunderbird family. This is a lifelong home, filled with a community that loves deeply and supports indefinitely.

Our goals for your child

Our goals for your child go beyond simply having a fun summer. At Camp Thunderbird, we believe that the experiences children have during these formative years shape how they see themselves and the world around them. We aim to create an environment where young people grow.

Kindness and empathy are at the heart of camp life. Living and adventuring together teaches campers to support one another and treat others with respect. In cabins, on the trail, and around the campfire, they learn how small acts of care build strong communities. Over time, looking out for others becomes second nature.

Camp also offers something increasingly rare: life without a screen. When campers step away from phones and devices, they reconnect with the present moment. They spend their days paddling across the lake, hiking wooded trails, and talking face to face with friends. Without constant digital distractions, campers learn to slow down and fully experience the world around them.

Another goal is helping campers find their people. At Thunderbird, they are surrounded by peers who value adventure, curiosity, and connection. These shared experiences create strong friendships that often last long after summer ends. Feeling accepted and understood helps campers grow more confident in who they are.

We also encourage campers to develop resilience and grit. Trying new activities, learning outdoor skills, and facing challenges builds perseverance. Campers discover that growth often happens outside their comfort zones.

Finally, we want campers to build confidence through real achievements. Whether completing a challenging hike, learning a new skill, or helping a friend, these moments create genuine pride. By connecting with nature and caring for their community, campers leave Thunderbird with a stronger sense of self.

The Brother Sister Experience

There are very few true brother-sister camps in the United States and we are proud to be one of them. With both a boys and girls camp operating under one mission and philosophy, siblings have the space to grow in their own respective programs while staying meaningfully connected throughout the summer.

Two separate camps just 2 miles apart means campers get the best of both worlds: the focus and confidence that comes with a single-gender experience free from the social pressures of co-ed camp, alongside a rich brother-sister tradition that keeps families close. Siblings, family members, and close friends connect once a week over a shared meal with time to hang out, swap stories, and cheer each other on. We also host co-ed evening activities built around games and teamwork, giving campers the chance to interact in a fun, low-stress atmosphere.

Our programs mirror one another, so siblings move through similar milestones at each camp. They can write letters throughout the summer, share in camp traditions, and celebrate one another’s growth along the way. At the end of the summer, they head home with their own stories and accomplishments, but with a common understanding of what it means to be part of the Thunderbird family.

We believe camp is the perfect setting for kids to simply be kids. This structure supports independence while preserving connection.

More about brother-sister camp experience (seo info)

Camp Thunderbird offers a unique brother-sister camp experience where boys and girls participate in parallel programs built on the same philosophy of adventure, friendship, and personal growth. Campers develop confidence through outdoor challenges, meaningful traditions, and strong community values. Weekly connections between camps allow siblings and friends to stay in touch while still enjoying the independence of their own camp environment. Families appreciate that campers share a common camp culture while building their own memories, skills, and lifelong friendships.

Learn More About Thunderbird

Camp Thunderbird offers a traditional summer camp experience centered on adventure, friendship, and personal growth. Families who want to learn more about Thunderbird can explore several areas that define the camp community. First, our program introduces campers to a wide range of outdoor activities and skill-building experiences. Campers paddle on the lake, play team sports, explore the woods, and participate in creative programs. As a result, they discover new interests while building confidence through real achievements.

In addition, the history of Camp Thunderbird reflects generations of leadership and strong traditions. Families continue to return because the camp values community, kindness, and personal growth. Campers share traditions, celebrate milestones, and form friendships that last well beyond the summer. Over time, these shared experiences create a strong connection to the Thunderbird community.

Health and wellness also guide daily life at camp. Campers stay active outdoors and spend most of their day moving, exploring, and connecting with nature. At the same time, staff members create a safe and supportive environment where every camper feels included. Because of this focus, campers develop healthy habits while strengthening both their confidence and resilience.

Camp Thunderbird operates as a brother-sister camp with separate boys and girls programs located about a mile apart. The boys camp helps boys develop independence, teamwork, and strong friendships through shared adventures. Likewise, the girls camp encourages leadership, creativity, and confidence in a supportive community.

Finally, leadership plays an important role in the Thunderbird experience. Older campers take on new responsibilities and learn how to mentor younger campers. They practice teamwork, develop communication skills, and grow as role models within the camp community. Families who want to explore the Thunderbird experience can request information and learn more about programs, traditions, and opportunities that make this summer camp community unique.
