At Camp Thunderbird for Girls, campers live in one of four villages: Sodbuster Village, Ranchero Village, Homestead Village, or Pioneer Village, which is home to the oldest campers. Villages are designed to create smaller communities within camp and to support age appropriate supervision and programming.
Each village consists of a cluster of cabins. Cabins house six to ten campers of the same age, with a minimum of three counselors assigned to each cabin. Counselors live in separate quarters within the cabin, allowing for consistent supervision while maintaining appropriate camper independence. Each village is overseen by a Head Counselor whose role is to ensure daily operations run smoothly and to support both campers and staff.
Cabins include bunk beds and personal cubbies for campers’ belongings. Each cabin has its own bathroom, and every village also has access to a central washhouse. Village life is active and communal. Campers spend time outdoors between activities, use shared spaces for games and conversation, and develop routines within their cabin groups. Living in close quarters provides structure, consistency, and opportunities for social growth throughout the summer.
Imagine your daughter stepping off that bus on her first day of camp, a mix of nerves and excitement. As she makes her way past her peers and counselors, singing the welcome song, she finds Tres, the Director, standing there, clipboard in hand. One by one she calls out a camper’s name, then their cabin, and just like that, a group of counselors and new cabin mates come rushing over, ready to welcome her into her new home!
Her new home: a charming cabin that comfortably fits eight campers and three staff. A wall separates the counselors from the campers, giving everyone their own space, while being close enough to support. Every camper gets at least three big cubbies, and this is where the magic begins. Choosing where your own belongings go, making your bed the way you want to, and owning your space, are moments of independence which stack on top of each other, summer after summer, forming something real. This space becomes undeniably theirs. Our number one goal is for every camper’s cabin to feel like home, and by the time your camper boards that bus back home, we have no doubt it will feel exactly that.

Yes! At Girls Camp there are bathrooms inside of each cabin. Showering takes place at each village's respective shower house. There are additional bathrooms inside these wash houses. Both Pioneer Village Cabins (JL cabins) have their own showers.
Yes, our kitchen team takes allergies and dietary needs seriously. No camper leaves the lodge hungry, ever. If the meal on the table isn’t working for your daughter, we’ll find something that does.
Homesickness is completely normal, and our counselors are trained to help! They'll make sure your daughter feels welcomed, included, and engaged from day one. Most campers settle in quickly once they start making friends and diving into activities.
If your daughter needs extra support, our staff will be there for her, and if needed, our leadership team will reach out to you directly so we can work together.
Please reach out directly to a camp director for any additional medical or safety questions. We are happy to provide more detailed information.
