At Camp Thunderbird for Boys, Everyday is Your Dream Day

A day in the life at Camp Thunderbird for Boys is simply not something you can replicate at home. It’s a utopia where every day is your child’s dream day, filled with endless fun and learning. Waking up to meals served fresh and hot by our incredible staff team, followed by cleaning their cabin balancing fun with responsibility.

Then off they go to their first two activities of the day. Maybe they start with rock climbing, blacksmithing, fishing, sailing, followed by pottery, soccer, basketball, or baseball. The possibilities are endless! After lunch, kids play ping pong, box hockey, tetherball, trampball, and cards, relaxing before the next two activities begin. Maybe it’s time to cool off in the lake, or maybe learn a new instrument. The choice is up to them!

After their last two activities campers enjoy an hour of free time before dinner. Dinner is served! From here, campers enjoy an all camp or village evening program featuring capture the flag, dodgeball, lip syncs, and more! Campers learn to reflect by debriefing their day with their cabin group before bed.

No Hangry Campers Here!

Meals start before campers even step foot inside the lodge. Outside of the lodge, cabins line up together at their village entrance, and the games begin! Trivia questions, spelling bees and best jokes help decide who enters the lodge first.

Inside, campers head to their cabin’s designated table and wait for the quote of the day, a dictated moment of silence, or a gratitude practice before sitting down. Our rule is simple: no one leaves the lodge hungry. Seconds are always called, PB&Js and turkey and cheese sandwiches are always up at the window, and if neither sound appealing, a counselor heads up into the kitchen until they find something that works.

When the meal wraps up, campers do what we call “stacking and racking”, a camp cleanup method. Once tables are cleared, announcements bring the whole lodge together one more time where activity updates, pro-sports scores are shared, and all camp songs are sung. On a rotating basis, cabins take on table waiting, arriving a few minutes early to each meal period that day to set up, and clean up. Here, everyone pitches in, but with a little extra dancing and singing along the way.

Evening Programming: The Day Isn't Over Yet!

Picture this: your son pushes back from the table after an incredible dinner, exchanging laughs with his friends as they spill out of the lodge and wander back towards their village. Once they arrive at their village, the village director gathers everyone together, announcing the evening’s attire, and just like that, the night comes alive once more. Your son might be a little full, a little drowsy from the meal, but the moment the program kicks off, none of that matters. The energy is contagious, the laughter is loud, and the adventure is very much still going.

What’s on the agenda? Dodgeball. Predator vs. Prey. Drama Skits and Lip Syncs. Casino Night. Sunset Swims. Capture the Flag. Staff Softball. Soccer Palooza. Standup Comedy. Movie Night. Judge Michael- remind us to tell you about this one. Village Fires. Thunderobics: aerobics elevated to something truly legendary. Scavenger Hunts. Council Fire. Duct Tape Boat Races. And that’s just barely scratching the surface.

From 7:30 to 8:45 every evening, your son will be part of something that feels less like a scheduled activity and more like the kind of night he’ll be talking about for years. We believe kids need both structure and space, and evening programming delivers exactly that. Team-based activities forge real friendships, and when the whole reason you’re playing is simply to have fun, those bonds form fast and run deep. There’s no pressure to be the best. There’s only one rule: give it everything you’ve got.

The rest? We’ll take care of it.

Campers are required to shower every other day, but can shower everyday if they choose to. We have a rotating schedule in each village to ensure campers are held accountable.

How often is laundry done?

Campers' laundry and sheets are washed weekly in house. If a camper runs out of clothing, a unit leader will wash their clothes for them.

What happens if my child gets hurt or feels sick during the day?

Nurses are always available to assist campers during the day.

What does rest time / downtime look like?

Days at Thunderbird include several hours of downtime throughout the day. Refer to our schedule for more details. During these times campers can play village games, nap, read, visit campers in other villages, and play cards.

How do you manage phones and communication with home?

Campers at Thunderbird do not have their phones. All communication takes place via the mail. Campers are required to write home several times per week, and parents are encouraged to send as much mail as they desire.

Birthdays are the exception. Campers can call home on their birthday.

How do counselors help kids make friends?

At Thunderbird we hire the best staff who have demonstrated the ability to help integrate campers into the community seamlessly. Staff are provided with tools, designed by professionals, to help campers make friends prior to campers arriving.
