Our counselors come back to Thunderbird summer after summer. Some of them grew up with us; others found us as adults and fit right in. Some are educators, some are college students and some are just people taking a break from their “real life.” They’re people from all over the country and all over the world with one thing in common: they love working with kids. Why? Because they know that it means something. Being a Thunderbird counselor is a way to make a positive, meaningful impact on a child’s life.
If you are no longer a kid, but can remember just what it’s like to be one, LOVE KIDS and are crazy about spending lots and lots of time with them, then you may have what it takes to be a counselor at Camp Thunderbird .
You don’t have to be way cool, or qualify as a finalist on American Idol. We look first for character, people who are:
Team players who are able to follow as well as lead |
Good listeners |
Compassionate and caring |
Enthusiastic and high energy |
Responsible, trustworthy and reliable |
HONEST |
Flexible, easygoing, down-to-earth and know how to have FUN |
Serious about being that special person in a kid’s life that he or she can look up to, rely on and aspire to be like. |
As a counselor, you would be responsible for living, working and playing in the out-of- doors with a cabin group of eight to ten campers within the same age group. You would live with and share this responsibility with 2-3 other counselors. This high staff-to-camper ratio allows you to have lots of support and a greater sense of camaraderie.
You don’t have to know how to sing or dance or slalom or sail. What you do know how to do very well – tennis, rapelling or biking, we would want you to teach. For those activities you would be willing to learn, we would like you to assist.
Since our campers sign up for activities on an individual basis every day, you would be assigned to teach, or assist in teaching, one or more activities three or four hours each day, four days a week to campers of all age groups.
Working as part of team in a down-to-earth atmosphere that fosters community and acceptance, you would be responsible for the emotional and physical well-being of your campers 24 hours a day. Each week you will have one (24-hour) day off, from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m., and one night off, from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., as well as shared free time throughout each day. This is more time off than is typical in a camp setting. At Thunderbird, we know that you work hard so we want you to be able to have the time to relax, enjoy yourself and rejuvenate.
Yes, a lot is expected. Being a counselor means being a diplomat and a caretaker, a playmate and a role model—all at the same time. Working as a counselor is, in fact, hard work. It’s also the best way you could ever spend a summer. And if you do apply now and end up joining our camp family, we promise you a summer to remember for the rest of your life.
As you go out into the world to find a job, employers will view your camp experience as one of great value. Regardless of where someone went to camp, the “camp experience” is a universal connection. We promise you will be instantly at ease in a job interview as you swap camp stories with your interviewer. Undoubtedly, they will remember you! As far as where you will find our alumni: on staff at major hospitals, deans of graduate schools, on Capitol Hill and imbedded in all types of businesses across the country. We are an excellent source of networking for your future career. Think of all the people we know after having done business for almost 60 years. 500 campers per season X 60 years. Do the math and think of the possibilities. Thunderbird is good for your resume too!
