Whoa! Where did the time go? A minute ago you were holding this baby in your arms, who was entirely dependent on you. Cute little tyke, but pretty needy. You couldn’t take your eyes off your child and not just because the kid was so good-looking.

Now approaching their pre-teen or teen years, your son wants to be his own man and your daughter wants to spread her wings. That’s right, mom and dad they’re looking for a challenge.

Camp Thunderbird is a place that offers such a challenge. We promise adventure – everything from gymnastics to backpacking trips. But we also provide strong guidance. Because we believe so strongly in guidance and giving your son and/or daughter individualized attention, we have one counselor for every three campers. We ask our campers to dream, teach them the skills they need to reach those goals and take it one step at a time.

We believe in collaboration and teamwork. But we honor the individual and teach that individual differences are a source of strength.

We instill in every camper a respect and a reverence for nature. We believe the sun, the sky, beautiful, pristine Lake Plantagenet and the Norway pines and birch trees are more than a setting for our activities. They are gifts to be treasured and understood.

Oh and, one more thing we should mention because it’s practically all your child will talk about upon arriving back home. Camp Thunderbird is all about friendships. There’s something about the outdoor experience; the challenges that cabin groups confront together that bonds one child to another. Friendships forged at Camp Thunderbird last a lifetime. Ask any of our alums. Many if not most, still remain close to their camp friends, whether they attended camp in 1946 or 2004.

You will notice many changes in your child after he or she returns from camp. One might be that he makes his bed or she volunteers to wash the dishes. We hate to tell you, but that usually tapers off after a couple of days. But here’s what endures among our campers: Self-confidence, a feeling that there are few challenges in life that can’t be handled because they’ve been there and done that at Camp Thunderbird.
