What’s all this talk about Thunderbird?
If you are 8 to 15 years old, these are the BEST YEARS of your life. Think about it. You’re old enough to think for yourself, pick your friends, choose your sports, set some goals. But, hey, you’re way too young to worry about college, make some serious coin, and no one expects you to solve the problems in the Middle East. Not yet.
All you’ve got to think about RIGHT NOW in the best years of your life is how to have the best SUMMER of your life.
You’ll find it in the WOODS, among the trees at a place called CAMP THUNDERBIRD. You may have heard of it. Like already, a bunch of people you know go there. And they keep going back.
You might have found these people a little tiresome, because most of them can’t stop talking about Thunderbird all winter long. They’re I’ming (instant messaging) their camp friends, visiting each other during school breaks and planning their adventures for the next summer and maybe even the summer after that. This has been going on for almost 60 YEARS for the boy’s camp and 35 for the girl’s camp. Think of it, entire generations haven’t been able to get T-Bird out of their systems.
Back to the basics: Thunderbird is on a lake near BEMIDJI, Minnesota. “ Map it” and you’ll find it’s several hundred miles from your older or younger brother or sister. You can go for four or EIGHT weeks. (If you go for four you’ll wish you could stay for eight… it just works that way.)
There are two camps, really. One for girls and one for guys. But they are the same lake, called Plantagenet. You live in a cabin with about eight to ten kids your age, who come from different towns, but they’re all a lot like you in that they like to have fun and they don’t mind getting dirty.
You do things together and you do things apart. You’re part of a group and you are encouraged to pursue your own dreams. You can go BACKPACKING for weeks at a time in some of the prettiest parts of this country you’ll ever hope to see (and Canada…a foreign country, eh?). Or you can choose among DOZENS of activities in camp. To learn more about all the cool things you can do at camp check out the activities.
Nobody decides what you do, but YOU – canoeing, biking, arts and crafts, archery, horseback-riding, sailing, skiing, gymnastics, tennis, just to name a few. What’ll it be? They are available at all skill levels. And, hey, mom and dad are FOOTING THE BILL, so why not try them all?
Well, there’s a guy named Moe, who among other things, has ongoing relationships with the squirrels, skunks, owls, porcupine, deer and fox that live nearby; and Carol, who knows every word of every camp song, but lip-synchs them like Ashlee Simpson. Along with them are a staff of experienced and fearless counselors and specialists. Most of them are college-age or just beyond and very cool.
