The Speedy and Honey Altman Memorial Camp Foundation was established by a group of individuals who attended Camp Thunderbird for Boys in Bemidji, MN in the first season (1947). Knowing the value and the personally rewarding experiences that can result from a summer camp experience, these Thunderbird alumni wished to foster and promote similar experiences for other children. Therefore, the Speedy and Honey Altman Memorial Camp Foundation was established to provide children who would otherwise not be able to experience camp with the opportunity to attend a program.
The Foundation gives money only to camps that are accredited by ACA thus ensuring that our recipients are in a safe and well run facility. Once at a facility, as you know, camp helps these children to enhance their self-image, experience positive risk while making long-lasting memories and friends.
Today, with the help of generous donations, hundreds of children are able to attend Camp Thunderbird and other camps throughout the country. As a result, these children are building skills in many outdoor activities just as you did when you attended camp. They too are learning independence by living away from home, and learning to accept responsibilities. We believe very strongly that this experience is expanding their horizons, increasing their self-esteem and giving them a more positive sense of self-worth. For some children, it may even be helping them to see a brighter future for themselves and to approach that future with renewed optimism.
We need your help to continue providing these children with an awesome camp experience. Join us in making this experience possible!
